Coal Mines. Methane in coal can be generated thermogenically, as part of the coalification process, 6 or biogenically owing to activity of microbes. Thermogenic methane is produced from coal organic matter by chemical degradation and thermal cracking mainly above a temperature of 100°C.
Back in the 20th century, coal miners came up with a novice method of detecting the presence of methane in coal mines – they started using canaries, i.e. small passerine birds which derived their name from the fact that they were native to the Canary Islands. When entering the coal mines, these miners began to take a canary along with them.
The first gas detector in the industrial age was the flame safety lamp (or Davy lamp) was invented by Sir Humphry Davy (of England) in 1815 to detect the presence of methane (firedamp) in underground coal mines. The flame safety lamp consisted of an oil flame adjusted to specific height in fresh air.
