Surfing in South Africa began in Cape Town at around 1910, this took place at Muizenberg beach. There's a small family owned cafe which was founded in 1937 which is still fully operational. This little cafe relevantly has loads of pictures of early Muizenberg hanging on the walls and the family of the founder who run the shop live to tell the tale.
